Bringing in the New Year Scottish Style

To make a long story short, I have Scottish relatives: aunts, uncles and cousins. They are wonderful people who we are just now getting to know. For the past week we have been spending time with them. They have been showing us their beautiful country from an insider's perspective.

On New Year's Eve we brought in 2007 in true Scottish fashion. We ate ox tongue, and neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes) with haggis (heart, liver and lungs of sheep wrapped in its intestines). And some of us brought in the New Year in our kilts (note: I was not one of them!).

Did you know that the song we Americans traditionally sing to bring in the New Year...'should old acquaintance be forgot...' was written by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. The name of the song? Auld Lang Syne.

Happy New Year!

(Photos: the first is of haggis. Does that make your taste buds water? The bottom photo is of Geoff, Alexander and Stuart, our relatives from near Glasgow. )
