Cuba is experiencing tremendous church growth, both in quality and quantity. This growth brings interesting conundrums. What do you do when your Bible study and prayer group has outgrown itself. Do you build a church? Not in Cuba! Since 1959 it has been illegal to erect church buildings.
Most pastors have elected to convert their own houses into what they call 'casa-cultos', or church houses. I was deeply moved by the sacrifice these pastors make. In almost every case, their houses are small to begin with. In spite of that, they make their living space even smaller, in order to convert the rest of the living space into a sanctuary for worship. As a result, there are no boundaries in ministry for Cuban pastors and their families. Their entire world is centered around the life of the church. This can take its toll on pastors and their families, as you might imagine. But it also provides amazing opportunities for ministry and community life.
Here you see just a few of the examples of these casa-cultos, which are all officially registered with the government.
