TOP TEN RANDOM FACTS ABOUT SCOTLAND AND CUBA

1. Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland.

2. St Andrews is the home of golf (golf was invented in Scotland some 600 years ago!). The Old Course is arguably the most famous golf course in the world, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (situated in St Andrews) is still the ruling body for golf.

3. Mary Queen of Scots was the first woman known to play golf—1568.

4. Protestant martyrs were burned in St Andrews in 1528, 1533, 1546, 1558. An obelisk above the Old Course is called the Martyrs Monument and it has their names inscribed.

5. The townspeople use to bleach their linen on the Old Course in the early days. Early rules for the game mention linen that interfered with play.

6. Cuba is roughly the size of Pennsylvania and has 11,300,000 inhabitants.

7. It is against the law for a Cuban to talk to a foreigner visiting Cuba.

8. Each Cuban family is given a ‘librito’—a little book that lists the amounts of rice, beans, eggs, milk, sugar and coffee that the government will ration to your family per month at the subsidized price. Given the lack of jobs and the low salaries, most Cubans live off of what they are provided by the government. The ‘librito’ ration only covers ten to fifteen days of food for the month.

9. It is illegal to buy or sell with US dollars in Cuba.

10. It is illegal to build a new church in Cuba. The only church buildings that exist in Cuba today are those that existed prior to Castro’s rule.
